Can You Cook In A RV?
I was so anxious to make our first RV kitchen, homey, functional and a delight to cook in. Visions popped in my head: chopping veggies, using gas for the first time in a RV, calming music playing for my ears, the gentle scene of essential oils caressing the air, air gently blowing in from the front door, with not a drop of sweat beading on my forehead, and a vast landscape of natural beauty right out my front door. Kind of sounds like a Hallmark movie? Well…it is not quite like that.
Cooking in a RV is not as easy as you think. Cooking sometimes require space, dishes and messiness. Yes, I am not that orderly or clean when it comes to cooking, but I do make great dishes, at least according to my husband.
You might be asking yourself, “Why would I want to cook in a RV when there is so much to do in the great outdoors and I can get food at a restaurant or a fast food joint or even barbeque on our new grill?” Well, that is true, however, for my husband and myself, it can get expensive eating out every night. Plus we have food allergies, so I make food that is good for our bodies, without worrying what the ingredients are and if they took off the item I requested with my order (it is funny to watch me order food at a restaurant or a fast food joint).
Cooking in a RV is possible, and you will have to realize cooking in a small space has its challenges. Like, how many pots and pans do you really need? How many mixing bowls can you toss and give to someone else? What I have found is I need at least 2 skillets (or I will be washing constantly), 3 pots (1 small, 1 medium and 1 big) and a few mixing bowls of various sizes. This will all depend on how much storage space you have or cabinetry, but this is what works for us.
Honestly, I think the most important part is counter space, counter space, counter space. I could never have enough like I did in my previous house, or sticks and bricks. But it is doable. I have to use the allotted space I have available for preparing my meals. Which can also mean, washing dishes often so I will have room for prep.
It can be frustrating at times when I have veggies to cut, things to cook in my skillet and a warm RV as the temperature rises with the stove or oven on. But I can make great meals like I did in my previous house, with a dose of patience and an ounce of joy. I am saving us money and making something healthy and edible for the two of us.
